Teaching Your Dog To Walk Nicely On A Leash
Blog Introduction: Does your pup pull on the leash? Are you tired of being yanked around when you’re out for a walk? You’re not alone! Many dog owners find themselves in this frustrating situation. But never fear, there are ways to train your pup to stop pulling on the leash and make walks enjoyable again. Read on to learn how!
Blog Body: The first step is teaching your pup to stay by your side. This can be done with a simple “heel” command. When they get too far ahead, gently tug their leash and say “heel” at the same time. When they turn back towards you, give them a treat or lots of praise as reinforcement.
The next step is teaching them to stay calm when walking. If they start getting too excited or rambunctious, try stopping and standing still until they settle down. Once they do, continue walking and give them lots of verbal praise for their good behavior. This teaches them that calm behavior gets rewarded!
Finally, teaching them not to be distracted by things like other dogs or people is important for keeping a steady leash walk. When something new catches their attention, immediately call their name so they look back at you instead of focusing on the distraction. Once again, reward good behavior with treats and verbal praise once they focus back on you. With patience and consistency, you can teach your pup to behave nicely while out in public—no more pulling!
Conclusion: Walking with a dog who pulls constantly can be an exhausting experience—but it doesn’t have to be! By using techniques such as teaching your pup to stay by your side, remaining calm while walking, and not getting distracted by external stimuli will help set up both of you for success during every outing together. With patience and consistency, soon enough those pesky leash-pulling days will be long behind you both!
